Foreign tourists using taxis from an international airport in Incheon to Seoul will be able to avoid inflated charges if they buy taxi vouchers in advance, city officials said Thursday.

The airport tax voucher system was introduced first in Hong Kong, and the Seoul city government plans to expand it to Japan, Taiwan and China. Taxi vouchers will be sold at the overseas branch of South Korea's tour agency Hana Tour.

The information center for international taxis at the arrival hall of Incheon International Airport, South Korea's main gateway west of Seoul, is in charge of taxi vouchers. The airport now has 367 international taxis.

President Park Geun-hye last month called for a bold turnaround in the attitude of South Korea's tourism industry, blaming an unkind attitude, cut-price package tours, and overcharging for chasing away foreign tourists especially from China.

"Problems such as cut-price package tours targeting Chinese tourists and overcharged tax fares are the main cause for complaints and hurt the reputation of our tourism industry," she said.
