China's state-run Liaodi Group hopes to invest some 177 million US dollars in a project to build a marina harbor targeting foreign tourists in South Korea's southwestern port of Dangjin, officials said Monday.

The proposal worth a total of 210.7 billion won ($177 million) was submitted last week by Liaodi, a construction and engineering firm run by China's Liaoning Province, said the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.

Liaodi suggested it would develop the Waemok harbor in Dangjin as a strategic point for cooperation between China and South Korea with an initial investment of 114.8 billion won to construct facilities such as bulwarks and docks capable of housing 300 boats simultaneously, the ministry said. Dangjin was one of the nine government-designated places to house marina harbors.

The Chinese firm has promised to invest an additional amount of 95.9 billion won in building hotels as well as commercial and leisure facilities in and around the marina, the ministry said in a statement.

Liaodi has been actively involved in development projects outside China, with its CEO Li Chunming talking about a series of investment deals with
South Korean provincial government officials.

As part of efforts to develop South Korea's marine leisure industry, the ministry called for active cooperation between Chinese and South Korean marina and cruise businesses. "We will actively try to attract foreign and domestic investors for the speedy development of our marine leisure industry," Park Seung-ki, a ministry official, said in the statement.

Official data showed the number of foreign tourists arriving in South Korea on cruise ships would rise from one million in 2014 to three million in 2020.
