South Korean military academies have lifted a strict, decades-long ban on cadets wearing civilian clothes and drinking alcohol off campus, military authorities said Monday.

The academies of army, navy and air force have revised school regulations related to alcohol and uniforms. Smoking and marriage are still prohibited inside or outside their campus.

Military authorities said the change was in light of changing social trends and followed a survey of cadets, parents, and retired soldiers. There was no mention of sexual relations.

Cadets are banned from having sex under any circumstances, and some have been expelled for sexual misconduct.

In 2013,  a senior cadet was kicked out for having sexually assaulted a junior cadet and another was disciplined for having sex with a schoolmate. Nine were punished for visiting a massage parlor during their trip to Thailand.
