Google announced during its earnings call on Tuesday that Gmail, Google-provided email service, now has more than one billion monthly active users. The numbers rose from 900 million, which was announced during the company’s I/O developer conference in May 2015.

Before Gmail, Microsoft’s Hotmail and Yahoo Mail were the most popular email service providers. Microsoft ditched Hotmail to move its users to Outlook.com accounts in 2013. Yahoo mail users went on an exodus after the company’s CEO admitted possible security breach in 2013.

The success of Gmail is due to the worldwide distribution of smartphones. With Android OS installed smartphones being the most dominant platform in smartphone ecology, Gmail is the default email service provider. Since not many people know how or even try to change the default email client, most of the smartphone users keep to Gmail.

According to Google, over 75 percent of Gmail users now access their accounts on mobile devices. This was the number the company released last year. Although the company had not released a new number, the number of users had likely to have increased.

With Gmail having more than one billion monthly active users, Google now has a total of six services which has more than one billion monthly active users. The other services are Search, Chrome, Android, Maps, YouTube and Google Play.
