Korea’s Ministry of Environment announced that some of Volkswagen’ models with Euro 5 and Euro 6 compatible diesel engine had been rigged with a defeat device. The ministry also announced that it will test all diesel fueled cars for any violation starting next month.

The car manufacturers which are subjected to tests are Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung, Ssangyong, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Peugeot, FCA Korea, Ford, FMK, Nissan and Volkswagen. Volkswagen is faced with more tests on its Golf equipped with Euro 6 diesel engine and a few other models.

The test, will be focused on whether there is a deliberate manipulation in emission. If failed, the manufacturer may face a halt in sales and would be forced to recall. Also may face up to KR\ 1000,000,000 in fine.

There were predictions from the experts that Korean car makers will benefit from Volkswagen’s fall, but having themselves on the list facing the Ministry’s test, they may have to worry about themselves.

According to an AJU NEWS CORP’s interview with an expert from the industry, the result is clueless. “We need to look closely whether to decide the diesel-fueled industry will fall along Volkswagen or not.” The expert said.

“Korean manufacturers already have their own turf taken away by foreign diesel fueled cars. But there is a chance for the Korean makers to spring back having Volkswagen’s crisis as a footstone.”
