Starbucks Korea has turned its coffee grounds into furniture. According to the company, by making furniture out of the espresso residue, more than 67,500 20-liter sized plastic rubbish bags will be saved a year which would also decrease emission of greenhouse gas.

Starbucks Korea opened a store at Gwanghwamun, Seoul filled with furniture made from the coffee waste. The shop’s interior and lighting were finished with materials made from coffee grounds. Also, its furniture was made from it. The coffee grounds had a unique texture when made into furniture. It also held a waxy shine on it due to the natural oil from the waste.

Coffee shops have at least one common problem. Getting rid of coffee grounds. Powdery stuff which is a residue from making shots of espresso.

According to Starbucks, an average of 14 grams of coffee grounds is left over in making of a tall size of Americano. Shops including Starbucks give away the coffee grounds to its customers to use it for household needs, but it just was not enough.

The global coffee shop brand is working hard to find more ways to use coffee grounds in every-day life. Earlier this year, the coffee giant had provided Gyung-gi province with unlimited fertilizer made from coffee grounds. It also made disposable cups and flower pots made of the waste.

It is their aim to have the coffee grounds recycled to 100 percent by the year 2018.
