Korea will boost wearable industry by investing $110 mil’

Wearable devices are hot not only in Korean market but worldwide, it’s about to gain more heat as Korean government is to invest KR\ 127 billion (US$ 110.7) on boosting the industry through 2020.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning announced Tuesday that they will allocate \111 billion on developing related tech, and \16 billion on providing support for local companies by setting up help centers.

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy said, “The world is at its early stage in the wearable industry, but its market is expected to expand further starting next year.” He emphasized the importance of the market, “Wearable devices can be used in different industries such as medical, defense, and safety, which will create huge markets across the globe”

According to the ministries, the global market for wearable devices will reach $70 billion by 2024.

U.S, Japan, and China have been working on developing wearable devices in recent years. While focusing on the daily use of the devices, the countries also focus on applying the technology in various fields.

Currently, the most popular form of wearable device is in a form of a smart watch. Apple Inc. released “Apple Watch” Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics released “Gear S2” smart watch series this fall.

Another form which gained much attention since its development is in a design of a headset or head mounted display. “Google Glass” is one of them.
