Daum Kakao plans to change its name to Kakao

South Korean mobile messenger operator Daum Kakao said Tuesday that it plans to change its name to Kakao. 

The plan is subject to approval by a shareholders' meeting scheduled for Sept. 23, said the company, operator of the country's top mobile messenger, KakaoTalk. 

The number of KakaoTalk users totals 38 million in a nation with a population of around 50 million.
 
Daum Kakao was created in October 2014 from the merger of Daum Communications, the country's second-largest Internet portal company, and Kakao Corp., the nation's top mobile messenger service provider.
