Imported car sales soar 14.3% on-year in July: industry data

Sales of imported cars in South Korea soared about 14 percent in July from a year earlier, industry data showed Thursday.

The number of newly registered foreign vehicles totaled 20,707 last month, up 14.3 percent from the same month last year, according to the data compiled by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association. 

The figure, however, represents a 14.7 percent decrease from a month earlier.

Cumulative sales of imported vehicles in the first seven months of this year reached 140,539 units, up 25.1 percent from the same period last year, the data said.

European brands accounted for more than 80 percent of the imported cars sold in the country in July, compared with 12.2 percent for Japanese vehicles and 7.4 percent for American cars.

German vehicles had a whopping 66.9 percent share of the market. Mercedes-Benz topped the list, with 3,976 units or 19.2 percent of the total sold, followed by BMW (3,926 or 19.0 percent), Volkswagen (2,998 or 14.5 percent) and Audi (2,617 or 12.6 percent).

The comparable figure stood at 908 or 4.4 percent for Ford, 894 or 4.3 percent for Mini, and 652 or 3.1 percent for Toyota.
