Myeong-dong, a popular shopping district in central Seoul, is crowded with people on Tuesday as South Korea declared the end of its Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) crisis earlier in the day. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn announced the de facto end of the MERS outbreak, while presiding over a meeting of officials from relevant ministries and agencies at the Government Complex building in central Seoul. The government has reported no new case of infection with the viral respiratory disease for the past 23 days, an indication that the MERS crisis has virtually ended in the country. The government confirmed the first outbreak of MERS in the nation on May 20.
