Samsung Electronics' share in the Chinese smartphone market fell to a single-digit figure in the second quarter of this year, a market researcher said Tuesday.

The South Korean tech giant had a 9 percent share in China's smartphone market in the April-June period, down 1 percentage point from the previous quarter, according to U.S.-based IHS Technology's China headquarters.

As a result, Samsung fell one notch to fifth place in smartphone market share in China, following Xiaomi, Huawei, Apple and Vivo. China is the world's largest smartphone market.

Chinese handset maker Xiaomi maintained its No. 1 position on its home turf, with its market share climbing by 4 percentage points to 18 percent during the period.

Its compatriot Huawei was in second place with a share of 16 percent, up 5 percentage points from the first quarter, followed by Apple with 12 percent, up 1 percentage point from the January-March period.

Vivo, also of China, moved up one notch to fourth place with 10 percent, up 1 percentage point from the first quarter.

Its compatriot OPPO had a 8 percent share, closely trailing Samsung's 9 percent.
