'Battle of Yeonpyeong' tops S. Korea's box office upon its release

A South Korean film depicting a bloody inter-Korean naval skirmish 13 years ago topped the local box office on the day of its release Wednesday, data showed. 

"Battle of Yeonpyeong," also known as "Northern Limit Line," drew 153,404 viewers to top the daily box-office chart, according to the data compiled by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the country's official box-office tracker.

Directed by Kim Hak-soon, the film starring actors Jin Ku, Lee Hyun-woo and Kim Moo-yeol is based on the inter-Korean clash that occurred in South Korean waters off the frontline island of Yeonpyeong in the West Sea (Yellow Sea) on June 29, 2002 when South Korea and Japan were hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Six soldiers were killed and 18 others injured in the second Yeonpyeong Battle that followed the first naval clash between the two Koreas in the area in 1999.

Another South Korean crime drama "The Classified File," directed by Kwak Kyung-taek,placed second in Wednesday's box-office ranking, by attracting 137,396 moviegoers. The movie is based on a 33-day kidnapping case in the southeastern port city of Busan in 1978.

Hollywood blockbuster "Jurassic World" came in third with 101,562 viewers, followed by "Minority Opinion" with 34,334 tickets sold.
