Over half of sexual offenses on Seoul subways occur during commuting hours: local gov't

More than half of sexual offenses against women that were reported to have occurred on subways in Seoul in 2014 happened during commuting hours, local government statistics said Wednesday.

About 26.7 percent of the reported sexual harassments occurred during the morning commuting hours between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m, while 24.4 percent happened during the evening rush hours between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m, according to the statistics submitted to Rep. Lee No-keun of the ruling Saenuri Party by the Seoul metropolitan government.

The number of sexual offenses reported last year totaled 1,356, up 3.7 percent from 1,307 in 2013, the statistics said. The comparable figure stood at 1,031 in 2012.

Sexual offenses on the subway were most frequent on line 2 with 457 cases or 33.7 percent of the total. Lines 4 and 7 were tied for second place with 146 or 10.8 percent. 

Sexual harassments were most frequent at Sadong Station (119), followed by Seoul Station (90) and Gangnam Station (88).

By age group, men in their 30s topped the list with 330 cases, followed by those in their 20s (304), 40s (174), 50s (70), 60s (31), teenagers (28) and 70s or older (12).

By occupation, salaried men ranked first with 437, compared with 181 for jobless people and 104 for students.
