China home to nearly 1.3 billion mobile phone users: report

China was home to 1,290 million mobile handset users as of March, a Chinese newspaper reported Monday. Given that China's population was estimated at 1,367 million as of the end of 2014, the Asian giant's mobile phone penetration rate exceeded 94 percent, the People's Daily newspaper said, citing statistics compiled by the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. By region, mobile phone penetration rate in Beijing, Shanghai, Gwangdong, Zhejiang and Fujian provinces surpassed 110 percent, the report said.
