Sexual offenses on subways on the rise

The number of sexual offenses on subways in Seoul reached 627 in the first half of last year, up 14 percent from 550 in the same period of 2013, police said Tuesday.

Sexual offenses on the subway in spring were more frequent than in winter. Of the 627 cases reported, 498 occurred in the April-June period, while the remaining 129 happened in the January-March period.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said as the spring comes, they plan to hold a campaign against sexual offenses at 21 transfer stations across Seoul on March 25 in cooperation with Seoul Metro, the operator of subway lines 1-4, and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

Of the total 627 cases, 27.4 percent or 172 occurred during the morning commuting hours between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m, while 25.7 percent or 161 happened during the evening commuting hours between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Sexual offenses were most frequent on line 2 with 43.1 percent or 270 of the total, followed by line 1 (15.6 percent or 98), line 4 (14.8 percent or 93) and line 7 (13.6 percent or 85).
