'Whiplash' tops South Korean box office over weekend

“Whiplash,” which won three 2015 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, Best Filming Editing and Best Sound Mixing, topped the South Korean box-office over the weekend, the country's official box-office tracker said Saturday. 

The movie sold 374,429 tickets between March 20 and March 22, which brought the total number of its viewers to 825,167, taking up a 24 percent share of box-office ticket sales, according to the Korea Film Council (KOFIC). 

“Whiplash” opened in theaters nationwide on March 12, and ranked fourth before climbing to the No. 1 spot.

Spy thriller "Kingsman: The Secret Service" retained its second spot with 317,721 viewers, closely trailed by live action film "Cinderella" (311,254 moviegoers).

Action thriller "Run All Night" ranked fourth by attracting 180,433 viewers, while South Korean film "The Deal" tumbled fourth notches to fifth place with 139,770 viewers.

South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp's latest sci-fi feature "Chappie" sold 94,347 tickets, falling three notches to sixth.
