Shipments of UHD TVs grew 633 percent last year to reach 12.1 million units, with Asia-Pacific accounting for 75 percent of the total, followed by North America (12 percent) and Western Europe (11 percent), Strategy Analytics (SA) said.
"Demand for UHD TVs is soaring worldwide as entry level price points drop well below US$1000, model availability expands and consumers seek out the next best technology as they upgrade their ageing flat panel TVs," the market researcher said in a report.
The United States will emerge as the leading market for UHD TVs in terms of household penetration by 2020, followed by the leading Western European markets, Australia, South Korea and China, it said.
Nearly 50 percent of U.S. homes will own an UHD TV by 2020, SA said.
