Nearly 30 percent of the world population were smartphone users last year, a U.S. market researcher said Thursday.

The number of smartphone users on the globe was estimated at 2.1 billion, or 29.2 percent of the world population, according to the market tracker, Strategy Analytics (SA).

The 2014 figure represents an increase of 40 percent from the previous year.

In 2015, smartphone users in the world are expected to rise to 2.5 billion (or 34.7 percent of the total global population), up 19 percent from 2014, SA said.

"We forecast global smartphone users to increase 100 percent during the next six years," it said on its website.
