The number of reported cases of counterfeit South Korean banknotes totaled 3,808 last year, up 6.1 percent from a year earlier, the central bank said Thursday.

Of the total fake bills reported to the Bank of Korea (BOK) in 2014, 1,351 or 35 percent were collected from the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives' branch in Hwagok-dong, Seoul, in September, the BOK said. All of them were 50,000-won notes.

Of them, 1,484 or 39 percent were 5,000-won notes, followed by 50,000-won bills (1,405 or 36.9 percent), 10,000-won notes (872 or 22.9 percent) and 1,000-won bills (47 or 1.2 percent).

The number of fakes per 1 million banknotes reached 0.9 last year, down from 2,2 in 2012, 3.1 in 2009 and 6.1 in 2006.

In 2011, a total of 10,053 counterfeit bills were reported. The figure dropped to 8,628 in 2012 and further to a record low of 3,588 in 2013, before rising to 3,808 last year.
