"The incredible popularity of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in China in the fourth quarter of 2014 has led Apple to take first place in the Chinese smartphone market for the first time by units shipped," the market researcher, Canalys, said, in a press release.
It attributed the success mainly to the large screen and LTE trends in China. China with a population of more than 1.3 billion is the world's largest smartphone market.
"This is an amazing result, given that the average selling price of Apple’s handsets is nearly double those of its nearest competitors," Canalys said.
Xiaomi came in second in its home turf, while South Korea's Samsung Electronics and another Chinese handset maker Huawei ranked third and fourth, respectively.
