S. Korea's auto-sector trade surplus drops 4.8% in 2014: customs data

The value of South Korea's auto exports rose slightly in 2014 from the previous year, customs data showed on Tuesday.

Korea exported 3,022,000 vehicles worth US$43,956 million last year, up 1.6 percent from 2013, according to the data compiled by the Korea Customs Service.

On the other hand, the value of the nation's auto imports reached $7,978 million in 2014, up 45.4 percent from a year ago. The number of vehicles imported totaled 256,000 units, the data said without elaborating.

As a result, Korea's surplus in the automobile sector declined on-year in 2014. The surplus totaled $35,978 million, down 4.8 percent from 2013.

Sales of imported vehicles in the country hit a record high of 196,359 units in 2014, up 25.5 percent from 2013, the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association said.
