South Korean President Park Geun-hye, who is to enter her third year in office next month, Friday nominated a top ruling party official as her new prime minister, Park's top press secretary said.

Park named Lee One-koo, floor leader of the Saenuri Party, as her new prime minister, the country's No. 2 job, senior presidential press secretary Yoon Doo-hyun said. Lee is a U.S.-educated, third-term lawmaker.

Prime Minister-nominee Lee, If approved by the National Assembly, will replace Chung Hong-won.

In June last year, President Park retained Chung as prime minister, although he offered to quit holding himself responsible for the government’s handling of the sinking of the ferry Sewol on April 16 that costed the lives of more than 300 people, mostly school children.

In Friday's reshuffle, President Park also named three senior secretaries. They were Hyun Jung-taek, former president of the government-funded Korea Development Institute (KDI), for policy coordination; Woo Byung-woo, presidential secretary for civil affairs, promoted to head of the presidential civil affairs office; and Cho Shin, a professor of Yonsei University, for future strategy.
