South Korean automaker Kia Motors said Friday that its operating profit fell nearly 20 percent in 2014 from a year earlier due to the strong local currency and weak currencies in emerging markets.

Operating profit fell to a four-year low of 2,572.5 billion won, down 19 percent from 2013, the carmaker said at a business performance presentation for 2014 at its headquarters in Yangjae-dong, southern Seoul.

Net profit also dropped 21.6 percent to 2,993.6 billion won last year from a year ago.

Kia, the country's second-largest carmaker, attained its sales goal of 3 million units or more last year but revenues decreased slightly because of the strong Korean won currency.

It sold 3,041,048 units worldwide, which generated revenues of 47,097 billion won, down 1.1 percent from 2013.

Kia has set a goal of selling 3,150,000 vehicles worldwide in 2015, up 3.6 percent from this year, company officials said.
