The number of mainland Chinese travelers going abroad reached a record high of 114 million in 2014, Chinese media reported Wednesday. The figure marks an increase of 16 percent from the previous year, the report said, citing figures from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Spending by those travelers abroad was estimated at US$140 billion (approximately 152 trillion won), up 18 percent from a year ago, it said.

South Korea has seen an upsurge in the number of Chinese tourist arrivals in recent years. According to data compiled by the Bank of Korea (BOK) and the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, Chinese arrivals totaled 460,671 in November last year, up 66.7 percent from the same month of 2013. They accounted for 41.2 percent of the total foreign tourist arrivals.
