Hyundai Sonata PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) ranked fifth in the Top 8 Electrified Vehicles at the ongoing North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the United States.

"Hyundai can now take its place alongside Ford, Toyota, GM, and others in the budding plug-in hybrid market with this one powered by a downsized 2.0-liter Nu GDI engine, 50-kw electric motor and six-speed transmission. This transmission is the only regular automatic among competitors which otherwise use continuously variable transmissions," the organizer said.

2016 Chevrolet Volt topped the list, followed by Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept, Audi Q7 Diesel Plug-in Hybrid, Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE Concept and Hyundai Sonata PHEV.

"The biggest alternative energy news at Detroit is arguably the all-new second-generation Chevy Volt," the organizer said. "This is the first plug-in to receive a full redesign, and pending EPA certification, the new Volt boasts 50 miles electric range – more than double any plug-in hybrid sold in the United States."

Mercedes-Benz C350 PHEV placed sixth, while 2015 Acura NSX and 2016 Honda Fuel Cell Vehicle Concept ranked No. 7 and 8, respectively.
