Beer imports soar 25.5% in 2014

The amount of beer imported by South Korea soared about 25 percent last year from a year earlier, data showed on Monday.


According to the data complied by the Korea Customs Service, the country imported 119,467 tons of beer (worth US$111.6 million), up 25.5 percent from 95,211 tons tallied in the previous year.

Japanese beer took the top spot for the fourth consecutive year in 2014 with 31,914 tons or 26.7 percent of the total beer imports.

Dutch and German beer ranked second and third with 17,821 tons or 14.9 percent and 16,688 tons or 14.0 percent, respectively.

Chinese beer moved up one notch to fourth place with 11,490 tons or 9.6 percent, while imports of U.S. beer contracted to 8,944 tons or 7.5 percent.

Meanwhile, imports of beer have exceeded beer exports for the first time since 1995 when the customs office began collecting related data as shipments decreased 1.9 percent to 111,004 tons on-year in 2014, the data said.
