South Koreans used smartphones more than three and a half hours (219 minutes) a day on average as of September, a report said Tuesday.

The figure more than doubles 91 minutes tallied in 2012, according to the report of Digieco, a research institute affiliated with South Korea's mobile carrier KT Corp.

Those in their 20s spent the longest time of 281 minutes on smartphones, followed by teenagers or younger (239 minutes), people in their 30s (220 minutes), those in their 40s (189 minutes) and people in their 50s (151 minutes), said the report based on an analysis of data provided by Nielsen Korean Click, a market research firm.

People spent 85 percent of the time to use applications, including social networking services, and the remaining 15 percent to browse the Internet, it said.

"With the introduction of smartphones, our life has become more comfortable. But it has also brought about big changes in our lifestyle, such as spending less time for meditation and breaks, or reading books, magazines and newspapers," the report said.
