Population of Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi Province will begin to shrink in 2030, after reaching a peak of 26.18 million or 50.2 percent of South Korea's total population in 2029, the country's statistical office predicted on Thursday.

Population of Seoul, the capital, is expected to decrease by 770,000 from 9.93 million in 2013 to 9.16 million in 2040, Statistics Korea said in a report, titled "Population Estimates for 2013-2040."

Meanwhile, population of adjacent Gyeonggi areas will grow from 12.14 million in 2013 to 13.47 million in 2031, the report said, adding that it will then begin to decline to 13.25 million in 2040, it said.

On the other hand, population of Sejong City, an administrative town about 150 kilometers south of Seoul, and adjacent South Chungcheong areas will increase from 2,060,000 to 2,388,000 during the 2013-2040 period, according to the report.
