Seoul moved up four notches to 10th place in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Best Student Cities 2015 index released on Tuesday (local time), nudging into the world’s top 10 cities for students.

"The city’s continual improvement comes from its high scores in a number of indicators, most notably in the 'employer activity' category, which reflects the reputation of universities in Seoul amongst domestic and international employers," said QS, a British company specializing in education and study abroad.

"The city also scores brilliantly within the 'university rankings' category, gaining the highest score in the top 10 outside of Paris and London. This score is explained by the impressive fact that there are 14 universities in Seoul that feature within the QS World University Rankings 2014/15," the company said.

The QS ranked South Korean universities included Seoul National, Yonsei, Korea, Sungkyunkwan, Hanyang, Kyung Hee, Ewha Womans, Sogang, Chung-Ang, the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, the Catholic University of Korea, Inha, Dongguk and the University of Seoul.

Paris topped the list, followed by Melbourne, London, Sydney, Hong Kong, Boston, Tokyo, Montreal and Toronto.

Cities ranked 11th-20th included Zurich, Vancouver, San Francisco, Munich, Singapore, Berlin, New York, Chicago, Barcelona and Vienna.

The list put Taipei, Beijing and Kyoto in 25th, 26th and 34th places, respectively.

The index highlights 50 of the world's best cities for students, based on a selection of indicators related to key areas, including "well-reputed universities, quality of life, employment prospects, a vibrant student community, and of course affordability," the company said.
