The number of international flight passengers to and from South Korea rose 16.2 percent to 5.05 million in October from the same month of last year, the government said on Monday.

Passengers who used South Korea-China routes soared 32.4 percent over the cited period, largely thanks to an especially large influx during China’s National Day holiday in early October, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Domestic traffic also rose 15.6 percent to 2.41 million last month from the corresponding month last year on the back of increased traffic to and from the southern resort island of Jeju.

When combined, the number of passengers totaled 7.46 million, up 16 percent from a year earlier, the transport ministry said.

The figure represents the highest level ever for the month of October.

International air cargo traffic increased 4.6 percent to 301,000 tons on-year in October, while domestic cargo traffic surged 15.5 percent to 26,000 tons.
