Earth just had its warmest October on record, a U.S. oceanic and atmospheric authority said Thursday (local time).

In its report on October global temperatures, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the October temperature averaged 14.74 degrees Celsius (58.43 Fahrenheit), 0.01 C (0.02 F) above the next warmest year (in records dating back to 1880).

The NOAA temperature records rely on mostly surface-based observations of temperature on the land and ocean surface.

Last month, NOAA published a chart indicating the global temperature for the remaining three months of the year need only average among the top 10 warmest for 2014 to be the warmest year on record, according to the Washington Post.

In a review of 2013, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said that 2013 was the warmest year on record, suggesting that many of the year's weather extremes are likely to have been heavily influenced by rising global temperatures.
