South Korea's gender equality fell six notches to 117th place in the Global Gender Gap Report 2014 published by a Swiss non-profit foundation on Tuesday (local time).

Qatar placed 116th in the Global Gender Gap Index, while Nigeria ranked 118th, the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Geneva said, based on a survey of 142 nations around the world.

The ninth-ranked Philippines was the highest-ranking Asian country, whereas China and Japan came in 87th and 104th, respectively.

Iceland was ranked the world's No. 1, followed by Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Nicaragua, Rwanda and Ireland.

The index presented in the report seeks to measure one important aspect of gender equality - the relative gaps between women and men across four key areas (health, education, economy and politics), the WEF said.
