'Gray divorces' hit record high in 2013

South Korea has seen a steady increase in divorce cases among elderly couples in recent years.

According to a yearbook published by the Supreme Court Wednesday, the number of couples, who divorced after 20 years of marriage or longer, totaled a record high of 32,433 in 2013, compared with 30,234 in 2012, 28,299 in 2011 and 27,823 in 2010.
    
The "gray divorces" accounted for 28.1 percent of the total divorce cases in 2013, up 5.3 percentage points from 22.8 percent five years ago.

On the other hand, the number of couples, who divorced after five years of marriage or shorter, has decreased - 31,528 in 2010, 30,689 in 2011, 28,204 in 2012 and 27,299 in 2013, the publication said.  

Couples who bid farewell each other after five years of marriage or shorter constituted 23.7 percent of the total divorces in 2013, compared with 27.2 percent five years ago.

Meanwhile, the number of newlyweds has fallen. A total of 331,543 couples tied the knot in 2011, but the figure decreased to 329,220 in 2012 and 325,016 in 2013.
