Number of vehicles registered in South Korea nears 20 million

The number of vehicles registered with the South Korean authorities nears 20 million, government data showed Wednesday. Automobiles registered nationwide totaled 19,951,810 in number as of the end of September in a country with a population of about 50 million, according to the data released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The figure represents a 2.8 percent increase from a year ago. 

The number of registered vehicles surpassed 10 million in 1997.

Of the total vehicles registered, 1,258,404 cars, including 163,421 imported automobiles, were registered in the first nine months of the year, the data said. The foreign-brand cars accounted for 13 percent of the vehicles registered in the January-September period.
