South Korean companies regained some lost ground in the global smartphone market in the third quarter, largely thanks to a cut in smartphone subsidies from Chinese carriers.

Samsung Electronics' share of the market rose by 1.8 percentage points to 28.7 percent in the third quarter from the same period of last year, Taiwanese market researcher TrendForce reported Monday.

LG Electronics also saw its share rise by 0.7 percentage point to 6.4 percent, outpacing Chinese budget smartphone manufacturer Huawei Technologies whose share fell by 1.5 percentage points to 5.5 percent, according to the report.

Apple Inc. retained its No. 2 spot after Samsung, with a share of 16.9 percent, up 4.9 percentage points from the April-June period. The hike was largely attributable to robust sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Lenovo, headquartered in Beijing, placed third with a 7.7 percent share, down 0.8 percentage point from the previous quarter, ahead of fourth-placed LG and fifth-placed Huawei.
