South Korea's coffee imports are expected to reach a record high this year. According to data released by the Korea Customs Service Tuesday, the country’s coffee imports marked 99,372 tons in the first nine months of the year, up 18.7 percent from 83,693 tons the same period last year.

The figure compares with 92,040 tons tallied in the January-September period of 2011, the highest since 1990 when the customs office began collecting related data.

Coffee imports from Vietnam reached 23,686 tons or 23.8 percent of the total imports, followed by Brazil with 17,566 tons or 17.7 percent, Colombia with 14,043 tons or 14.1 percent, Honduras with 9,219 tons or 9.3 percent and Peru with 6,782 tons or 6.8 percent.

The nation's coffee consumption has grown rapidly in recent years as franchise coffee shops exploded in number.
