South Korean movie theaters set a record 539.9 billion won in combined revenue in the third quarter, up 12.7 percent or 60.9 billion won from the same period of last year, data showed Wednesday.

The number of moviegoers during the July-September period also hit a record high of 69.18 million, up 2.9 percent or 1.98 million from a year earlier, according to the data compiled by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) that tracks box-office sales.

Of the total moviegoers, 43.26 million people viewed Korean films, a figure similar to that tallied during the corresponding period of 2013. Those who watched imported movies totaled 23.93 million in number, up 8.3 percent or 1.99 million from a year earlier.

KOFIC officials attributed the increase in revenue to the rise in the number of people who viewed imported films and a hike in admission fees by about 1,000 won from last year.
