Foreign residents in S. Korea exceed 1.7 million

The number of foreigners residing in South Korea hit a record high of more than 1.7 million as of the end of August, up 10.6 percent from a year earlier, the government reported Tuesday. 

Foreign residents in a country with population of about 50 million totaled 1,710,896 in number, with Chinese taking the lion's share of 865,875 or 50.6 percent, followed by Americans (137,282 or 8 percent), Vietnamese (128,449 or 7.5 percent), Thais (76,670 or 4.9 percent) and Filipinos (50,506 or 3 percent), according to the Ministry of Justice.

The comparable figure stood at 43,557 Uzbeks, 40,724 Japanese and 40,695 Indonesians.  

People in their 20s accounted for 28 percent of the total foreign residents, followed by those in their 30s (25 percent), people in their 40s (18 percent) and those in their 50s (15 percent), people aged 60 or older (9 percent) and those aged 19 or younger (5.1 percent).
