South Korea and Canada signed a free trade agreement (FTA) on Monday (local time), describing the deal as “an historic initiative that will strengthen our trade and investment ties across the Pacific.”  President Park Geun-hye and Prime Minister Stephen Harper reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the “ambitious, state-of-the-art agreement” at an early date in a joint declaration issued following the summit meeting in Ottawa. The FTA is subject to ratification by the countries' respective legislatures. South Korea is the first Asian country to sign a free trade agreement with Canada.
