German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been selected as winner of the 12th Seoul Peace Prize for her devotion to world peace.

The selection was made during a meeting of the prize’s screening committee in Seoul, the committee said on Wednesday.

Merkel was chosen as recipient of this year’s Seoul Peace Prize for her contributions to international peace through cooperation between countries, endeavor to eliminate terrorism for the establishment of peace, efforts to overcome the economic crisis facing Europe, and contributions to environment and sustainable development, Lee Chul-seung, chairman of the screening committee, said in a news conference.

The Seoul Peace Prize is a biennial award established in 1990 to commemorate the success of the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul.

Previous recipients include former U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan in 1998; Muhammad Yunus, founder of microcredit lender Grameen Bank, in 2006; and incumbent U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki-moon in 2012.
