S. Korean wins Pablo Casals Int’l Cello Competition in Hungary

South Korean cellist Mun Tae-guk has won the Pablo Casals International Cello Competition in Budapest, Hungary, the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation in Seoul said.

A total of 157 cellists aged 32 or younger from 38 countries and regions entered the competition, which was held from Sept. 4 through Sept. 13 (local time) as part of the 48th Budapest International Music Competition. Pablo Casals (1876-1973), a Spanish Catalan cellist and conductor, is regarded as one of the greatest cellists of all time.

Mun, 20, began playing the cello at the age of four and made his debut in 2004. In 2011, he won the first prize of the Andre Navarra Cello Competition in France.
