South Korea’s per-capita tax payment decreased by 48,000 won to 5,091,000 won in 2013 from the previous year, government data said Thursday.

It marked the first decrease since 2009 when the per-capita tax payment totaled 4,263,000 won, down from 4,347,000 won in 2008.

Officials attributed the decrease in 2013 to the fall in revenue amid the economic downturn.

The per-capita tax payment stood at 4,592,000 won in 2010, 4,915,000 won in 2011 and 5,139,000 won in 2012.

In 2013, the total tax revenue amounted to 255.68 trillion won in the country with a population estimated at 50.21 million, according to the data released by the strategy and finance ministry; the security and public administration ministry; and the National Tax Service.
