Uli Stielike, a German football manager and former player, has been named the new head coach of the South Korean men's national football team, the country’s football governing body announced Friday.

Under a contract signed with the Korea Football Association (KFA), the 59-year-old will lead the team until the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the KFA said.

The post of South Korean head coach has remained vacant since Hong Myung-bo resigned on July 10 in the wake of the country’s worst World Cup performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

South Korea failed to advance to the round of 16 in Brazil with a draw and two losses in Group H preliminary matches.

Stielike, affectionately known as “The Stopper,” coached the Cote d'Ivoire national team from 2006 and 2008 and the Qatari football club Al-Siliya SC later.

He was a central midfielder or sweeper for West Germany's national football team between 1975 and 1984.
