Number of students falls 2.8% on-year in 2014

The number of students attending South Korean kindergartens and elementary, middle and high schools fell 2.8 percent this year from 2013, the education ministry reported Thursday.

They totaled 6,986,163 in number as of April 1, 2014, the report said. The figure represents a decrease of 201,221 or 2.8 percent from last year.

The number of students per class stood at 19.7 for kindergartens, 1.8 students fewer than last year; 22.8 for primary schools, 0.4 fewer than 2013; 30.5 for middle schools, 1.2 fewer than last year; and 30.9 for high schools, 1.0 fewer than 2013, the report said.

Foreign students visiting South Korea declined for the third consecutive year in 2014. Of the 6,986,163 students, 84,891 or 1.21 percent were foreigners, down 1.2 percent from a year ago, it said.

Chinese seeking to obtain degrees in the country accounted for 64.3 percent of the total foreign students, followed by Mongolians (4.2 percent), Vietnamese (4.0 percent), Americans (3.4 percent) and Japanese (2.6 percent).
