‘The Pirates’ draws more than 5 million moviegoers

"The Pirates," a South Korean comedy-action film, has attracted more than 5 million viewers since its release on Aug. 6, its distributor said.

According to Lotte Entertainment, the film surpassed the 5 million mark as of 6 a.m. Friday, the 17th day since its release.

It is the third South Korean movie to top 5 million viewers in 2014, following "Roaring Currents" which drew 15.45 million moviegoers and “Miss Granny” that attracted 8.65 million viewers.

“The Pirates,” directed by Lee Seok-hoon (“Dancing Queen”), stars actress Son Ye-jin and actor Kim Nam-gil. In the film set in the early Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910), bandits and pirates try to recover the missing royal seal from the whale that swallowed it.

The film will screen at theaters nationwide until the Chuseok holiday which falls on Sept. 7-9, a Lotte Entertainment official said.
