Imported car sales soar 21.1% on-year in July

Sales of imported vehicles in South Korea hit a monthly record high of 18,112 units in July, up 21.1 percent from the same month of last year, an industry source said Wednesday.

The figure represents a 1.7 percent increase from the previous month, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA).

BMW retained its best-selling foreign-car brand title, with 3,363 units registered with the authorities. Three other German brands ranked 2nd-4th: Mercedes-Benz (3,349 vehicles), Volkswagen (3,157) and Audi (2,860).

Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI Blue Motion topped the list of best-selling models in July with 906 units sold, followed by Audi A6 2.0 TDI (681 vehicles) and BMW 520d (550 units).

Cumulative sales of foreign-brand automobiles totaled 112,375 units in the first seven months, up 25.6 percent from 89,440 vehicles tallied during the corresponding period of last year, the KAIDA said.
