Cho Yang-ho, chairman of Hanjin Group who led South Korea’s successful bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2018, was elected Thursday as new head of the organizing committee of the Winter Games in PyeongChang, an alpine town in South Korea.

The election came in a meeting of the committee held at the Korea Press Center in central Seoul.

The post was vacated on July 21 when Kim Jin-sun resigned with more than a year to go before his second term expires, citing the need for the committee to have a new leadership.

PyeongChang, located about 180 kilometers east of Seoul, beat out Munich of Germany to win the right to host the Winter Olympics in 2018, South Korea's first-ever Winter Games.
