Yoo Heung-soo, a former four-term lawmaker and head of the Korea-Japan Friendship Association, has been tapped as new ambassador to Japan, officials said Tuesday.

Yoo's appointment has yet to receive the Japanese government's agrement.

The post has been vacant since Lee Byung-kee was named to head the National Intelligence Service (NIS) last month.

Yoo, 77, served as chief of the National Police Agency between 1980 and 1982, and governor of South Chungcheong Province during the Chun Doo-hwan administration.

He also worked as chief secretary to the chairman of the now-defunct ruling Democratic Justice Party (DJP) in 1987, vice secretary-general of the DJP in 1988 and a senior policy-maker of the party during the 1990s.

From 2000 to 2004, Yoo served as a ranking official of the South Korea-Japan Parliamentarians’ Association.

In recent years, he has worked as a standing adviser to the ruling Saenuri Party.
