In a statement, Kim, 68, said he made up his mind to step down as head of the organizing committee as he thought that the committee, with about three and a half years to go before the Winter Games, “needs a new leadership and to reinforce its system.”
Kim, a former governor of Gangwon Province, was reelected to serve his second term in October last year. His two-year term expires in October next year.
Kim’s resignation came after Moon Dong-hoo stepped down as vice chairman of the organizing committee following an inspection of the committee by the Board of Audit and Inspection.
