About 43 percent of South Koreans wanted a foreigner to coach the South Korean men’s national football team, while 39 percent said they preferred a South Korean national to a foreigner, a survey said.

The remaining 18 percent gave no answer or said “I don’t know,” according to the Gallup Korea poll of 681 people aged 19 or older released on Thursday. The survey was conducted on July 15-16.

The post has been vacant since July 10, when Hong Myung-bo resigned in the wake of the team’s poor performance at the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. South Korea failed to advance to the round of 16 as it went winless in matches in Group H, its worst World Cup performance since the tournament in France in 1998.

The poll said 47 percent of male respondents and 38 percent of female pollees preferred a foreign coach.

Sixty-six percent of those in their 20s questioned and 27 percent of interviewees aged 60 or older said they'd like to see a foreign national lead the national football squad.
